The Syrian conflict \u201cis worsening in an extremely dramatic manner\u201d, Minister Giulio Terzi explained to journalists, referring to a meeting at the foreign ministry with former Syrian premier Riad Hijab, who abandoned the regime in August. Terzi said that Damascus is not \u201cwilling\u201d to engage in dialogue and \u201cthe future promises to be a very dark one if the conditions are not found among the various opposition groups\u201d for a \u201ccommon platform\u201d from which to launch a \u201ctransition\u201d. <\/P>

Possible ceasefire a step forward<\/STRONG><\/P>
\n

As for the possibility proposed by special UN envoy Lakhtar Brahimi of a ceasefire in coincidence with the Islamic festival of sacrifice that begins on Friday, Terzi stressed that \u201cBrahimi says that this would be a very small step on which to build, and that to me seems an assessment to be considered\u201d.<\/P>

Rapid and decisive actions needed<\/STRONG><\/P>
\n

Former Syrian premier Riad Hijab stated that the Syrian regime \u201cis not ready to negotiate\u201d and for that reason \u201crapid and decisive\u201d actions are needed, i.e. \u201cinternational pressure from the UN Security Council forcing the regime to put an end to this tragedy\u201d.<\/P>
\n

In any case, he added, \u201cthe only solution is to bring Assad down\u201d, because the Syrian people, who have suffered \u201ctens of thousands of deaths\u201d, \u201chave passed the point of no return\u201d.
