The European Union fully supports the Italian government in regard to the case involving two Italian marines detained in India, and continues to give the case the \u201cmaximum priority\u201d in its dealings with its Indian counterparts. This was the assurance from EU High Representative Catherine Ashton\u2019s spokesman Michael Mann, who expressed \u201csurprise and disappointment\u201d with an Italian daily newspaper\u2019s reconstruction of the situation accusing Europe of having \u201cdumped\u201d the marines. <\/P>

Today\u2019s \u201cIl Giornale<\/I>\u201d quotes a letter from the European Diplomatic Service to the Facebook page ”Ridateci i nostri leoni”<\/I> and its 70,000 followers, which had called for Brussels\u2019 intervention. According to the newspaper, Europe has taken its distance, maintaining that the EU\u2019s intervention \u201cwould not be appropriate in a question that concerns the legal authority of a foreign government\u201d. Brussels\u2019 response was quick in coming: \u201cThe letter\u201d, explained Mann, \u201ccites the High Representative and Diplomatic Service\u2019s numerous efforts in support of the Italian government in resolving the controversy, also in relation to the international legislation that regulate those institutions\u201d. While the reference to the legal authority being examined by the court underscored \u201cthe need to allow the legal proceedings to run their course\u201d.
