Italy and the United States \u201care working in the same direction\u201d on the main international dossiers, from the Syrian crisis to the Libyan and Afghan transitions. \u201cWe acknowledged a complete unity of intent on stabilisation and security reinforcement on all international scenarios from Libya, to Mali to Syria\u201d, Minister Giulio Terzi explained at the end of a meeting in Washington with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. <\/P>

Afghanistan<\/STRONG>: still problems but many successes, says Terzi<\/STRONG><\/P> Italy, the United States and the other NATO members engaged in Afghanistan are \u201cmaintaining the timetable\u201d outlined during the Alliance\u2019s latest summit in Chicago, Terzi explained, adding that, thanks to the training programme for Afghan security forces that they had now reached \u201ca considerable number of operational staff\u201d. \u201cThere are still many problems\u201d, he added, \u201cbut we are confident that the stability agenda can be carried forward\u201d. What\u2019s more, \u201cremarkable progress has been made over the past decade\u201d. Clinton expressed \u201cappreciation for the sacrifices by the Italian military and their families\u201d during Italy\u2019s engagement in Afghanistan and recalled the US and Italy\u2019s common commitment to the Afghan \u201croad map\u201d, acknowledging Italy\u2019s \u201cleadership\u201d role and \u201cgenerosity\u201d in ensuring its support to Afghan security forces after 2014.<\/P> Libya<\/STRONG>: Italy\u2019s role crucial to defence of the population, says Clinton<\/STRONG><\/P> \u201cItaly has had and continues to have a crucial role in the context of NATO\u2019s recent defence of the Libyan people from Gaddafi\u2019s violence. More than four thousand mission were launched from Sigonella\u201d, Clinton said, pointing out that \u201cItaly\u2019s support was fundamental\u201d also after the attack on the consulate in Benghazi that cost the life of Ambassador Chris Stevens. Clinton thanked Terzi and the Italian government \u201cfor what you have done. We will continue to work together to stabilise Libya and give the Libyan people the future they desire\u201d. Terzi reported that \u201cwe were shocked in Rome\u201d at the killing of Ambassador Stevens, who \u201cleft behind many friends\u201d. Italy considers his \u201csacrifice\u201d an \u201cencouragement to make a greater commitment to the democratic and peaceful future of Libya\u201d and that \u201cwe are working with the US to strengthen political institutions, and a government backed by the people\u201d.<\/P> Syria: working with the opposition<\/STRONG><\/P> “In Syria too\u201d, Terzi went on, \u201cdespite the enormous crisis, we are working with various opposition groups toward creating the opportunity for a new future in a country that respects human rights and those of minorities\u201d. <\/P> Nobel Prize to the EU: Terzi-Clinton satisfaction<\/STRONG><\/P> Both Terzi and Clinton hailed the choice of the EU for the Nobel Peace Prize. \u201cMy congratulations for an acknowledgement\u201d, Clinton said, \u201cof what was no accident but the fruit of hard work and dedication to a more united and peaceful Europe\u201d. Terzi spoke of the \u201crecognition of the role that Europe plays in the world. The hope is that it will always speak with one voice and, in that way, give ever increasing strength to the common values that regulate transatlantic relations\u201d.<\/P> Terzi presents the Year of Italian Culture in the USA<\/STRONG><\/P> \u201cI have the honour, my dear Hillary, to present 2013, the Year of Italian Culture in the United States\u201d, said Terzi as he introduced this highly important initiative, underscoring how \u201cculture takes on a central role in foreign policy, especially for Italy\u201d. \u201cI can\u2019t wait\u201d, Hillary replied, \u201cI thought that every year was a celebration of Italian culture.
