Strengthening economic cooperation<\/strong> between Italy and Portugal in the civil shipbuilding and digital technologies sectors, as part of a broader commitment to developing the blue economy<\/strong>, has been the focus of the recent webinar “Portugal-Italy: Opportunities for Blue Strategic Partnerships.” The initiative was organized by F\u00f3rum Oceano<\/em>, the body coordinating Portuguese government activities related to the maritime economy, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Lisbon.<\/p>\n

The event brought together approximately one hundred economic operators and institutional stakeholders, presenting the opportunities offered by the maritime sector for both Italian companies and their Portuguese counterparts. The aim was to stimulate new initiatives, such as business missions<\/em> and dedicated sector forums<\/strong>, as a first step towards closer economic relations.<\/p>\n

The priorities identified concern five strategic areas: nautical and coastal tourism; bluetech and ocean observation; shipbuilding and repair; green shipping; aquiculture and marine biotechnology. These are sectors with high potential for developing collaborations and joint ventures, not only bilaterally but also in third-party markets<\/strong>, given the opportunities arising from the European Union’s agreements with Mercosur and India. At the multilateral level, the contribution that Italian-Portuguese collaboration can make to the growth of a sustainable and shared blue economy<\/strong> in the Mediterranean was also highlighted.<\/p>\n

The topic of sustainability emerged strongly in the discussions, with references to the central role of the Italian nautical industry and the opportunities for cooperation with Portuguese companies. In particular, areas such as alternative fuels, port electrification, and fleet modernization<\/strong> are areas of significant shared interest.<\/p>\n

The integration of industrial supply chains and applied research<\/strong> is directly related to this topic. Partnerships with universities and research centres are a key factor for technological development and the promotion of innovative solutions, such as underwater and aerospace technologies, which are essential for the collection, transmission, and analysis of marine environmental data.<\/p>\n

Cooperation between the two countries’ maritime sectors<\/strong> can therefore develop on multiple levels, extending to the civilian and related sectors a focus already evident in the defence sector, as demonstrated by the negotiations for the supply of three frigates to the Portuguese Navy by Fincantieri<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Genoa International Boat Show Scheduled for Next October<\/strong><\/p>\n

Registration for exhibitors for the 66th Genoa International Boat Show, scheduled for October 1-6, 2026, has officially opened since mid-February. Established in 1962, it is one of the main international events for the nautical and maritime sectors in general, helping to strengthen Italy’s role as a leader in the sector. The Italian nautical industry’s turnover has grown steadily over the years, reaching \u20ac8.6 billion in 2024.<\/p>\n

Internationalization remains a key aspect of the Show: collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs allows for a highly qualified presence of the sector’s leading global players. The 2026 Show will feature the TechTrade Days, a B2B format now in its second year, focusing on services, components, and technological innovation. The aim is to strengthen the Show’s role as a leading platform for the entire nautical supply chain on global markets.<\/p>\n
