In an era of great geopolitical uncertainty, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway remain at the top of global well-being rankings: according to the latest World Happiness Report, all five countries are in the global top 10, with Finland ranking first for the eighth consecutive year.

This Nordic well-being is not only the result of high per capita incomes, but the result of a mixed economic system capable of combining the dynamism of the free market with a solid and inclusive welfare state. It is a sophisticated balance, founded on a social pact based on mutual trust between citizens and institutions, in which economic prosperity is redistributed to ensure widespread security.

The Scandinavian system is underpinned by a principle of universality that accompanies citizens in every aspect of life, from education to healthcare. This is financed through markedly progressive taxation – the tax burden exceeds 40% of GDP (compared to an OECD average of 34% – but is accepted due to the extremely high quality of public services provided. This is complemented by investment in social insurance, which is almost double the OECD average (around 4% of GDP), aimed at reducing unemployment and illness risks, and by an extremely robust collective bargaining system. This system, structured at sectoral and company levels, helps ensure fair wages and high labour market participation, supported by a gender equality deeply rooted in the local culture.

The new technological frontier and environmental vulnerabilities

In parallel with its effective social model, the region has established itself as one of the most dynamic technology hubs in the world. Alongside traditional industrial and service giants – such as Volvo, Carlsberg, Novo Nordisk, Maersk, and Equinor – an innovation ecosystem has flourished, giving rise to digital champions like Spotify. From telecommunications (Ericsson, Nokia) to renewable energy (Vestas), Scandinavia is now a hotbed of high-value startups.

Northern Europe, however, also faces environmental vulnerability. Recent studies by World Weather Attribution highlight alarming signs: the region is warming two to four times faster than the global average.

Unprecedented heatwaves, with peaks exceeding 30°C above the Arctic Circle, are straining infrastructure designed for cold, harsh climates and threatening age-old ecosystems, such as those linked to the reindeer herding of indigenous Sami communities. The phenomenon is exacerbated by a progressively aging population, while overcrowding and overheating in hospitals, the proliferation of toxic algae in the seas, and increasing forest fires are forcing Scandinavia to rethink its resilience models.

This focus entirely dedicated to the Scandinavian region aims to analyse in detail five key markets for the country’s internationalization strategies. Characterized by solid and diversified growth dynamics, these economies are suitable destinations for Italian manufacturing excellence, offering highly attractive scenarios for the export of high-value-added goods and services.

Climate change: the multiplier of social inequalities

A new report commissioned by the Norwegian Environment Agency, in collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Families (BUFDIR), underlines that climate change is not only an environmental challenge, but also a powerful multiplier of social inequalities. The study highlights a tripartite dynamic: the most vulnerable groups are simultaneously the most exposed to extreme events, the most vulnerable in terms of health, and those with the least financial capacity to adapt.

Factors such as social isolation, low income, and inadequate housing standards (e.g., poorly ventilated buildings or those located in urban “heat islands”) amplify the impact of heatwaves and floods. The elderly and those with poor support networks are most at risk. These findings underscore the urgency of adaptation strategies that are not only technological but also deeply inclusive, focusing on strengthening social infrastructure and emergency communications accessible to all segments of the population.

The Arctic as a laboratory for the future of rail

The Arctic region is becoming a strategic platform for rail experimentation thanks to the “Arctic Test Arena” project. Norway and Sweden have launched a project on the Ofotbanen and Malmbanan railway lines, totalling 473 kilometres, to test new solutions. Extreme climate conditions allow for testing the resilience of trains and digital infrastructure with unparalleled efficiency: due to the freezing temperatures, mechanical defects emerge so quickly that a single year of testing in the Arctic is equivalent to ten years of testing in Southern Europe.

The challenges of such an environment therefore turn into an advantage for the development of cold engineering, digital monitoring, and cutting-edge solutions for the safety and sustainability of rail transport globally.

The Nordic region continues to be a global point of reference for economic stability and quality of life.
