Following the instruction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, the Secretary General of the Italian Foreign Ministry, Amb. Riccardo Guariglia, summoned the Italian Ambassador to Israel, Jonathan Peled, to express the Italian Government\u2019s strong protest regarding the incident involving Italian citizens of the Freedom Flotilla. During the meeting, the immediate release and rapid return to Italy of all Italian nationals still detained was requested.<\/p>\n
The Secretary General reaffirmed, at the direction of Minister Tajani, the unacceptability of what happened, also in light of the fact that the citizens involved were not armed nor had violent intentions. The seriousness of the intervention in international waters has also been highlighted and there has been strong indignation at the images that have been circulated in recent hours.<\/p>\n
It has been pointed out, as Minister Tajani has already said today, that the Italian Government reserves the right to evaluate the most appropriate political initiatives to be taken at European level.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to follow the case with the utmost attention, in constant contact with the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv and with the Israeli authorities, in order to guarantee the best possible support to the Italian nationals involved and facilitate their safe and rapid return home.<\/p>\n
