Referring to the Modernized Global Agreement between the European Union and Mexico and the Interim Trade Agreement (iTA), signed on May 22 in Mexico City, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said: “The EU-Mexico Modernized Comprehensive Agreement opens up very positive prospects for the growth of bilateral trade and reaffirms the central role of European trade policy in strengthening economic ties with strategic partners such as Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: “This agreement will offer significant opportunities to European and Italian companies, particularly SMEs and sectors of excellence for Made in Italy, encouraging investment, exports, and access to a market of growing strategic importance.”<\/p>\n
The agreement updates and expands the cooperation framework in place since 2000, strengthening the strategic partnership between the European Union and one of Latin America’s key economic players. The EU is already Mexico’s third-largest trading partner, and the agreement is set to further strengthen this steadily growing trade.<\/p>\n
From an economic and commercial perspective, the agreement provides for significant trade liberalization, with the elimination of tariffs on a large portion of European exports of industrial and agricultural goods and new opportunities for Italian and European companies. Of particular importance is the strengthening of protection for European Geographical Indications recognized by Mexico, which now total 568, including 64 Italian ones, benefitting agri-food production and local areas.<\/p>\n
Trade between the EU and Mexico reached \u20ac87 billion in 2025, with a trade balance in favour of the EU equal to \u20ac19 billion (exports \u20ac53 billion; imports \u20ac34 billion). Italy is Mexico’s second-largest EU partner and twelfth-largest overall supplier, with a market share of 1.5%.<\/p>\n
