At the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has allocated funding of EUR 1,150,000, signed by Deputy Minister Edmondo Cirielli, to support the immediate humanitarian response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The funding will be made available to Italian civil society organisations with an operational presence in the affected provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.<\/p>\n
These are immediate interventions aimed at halting Ebola transmission, strengthening epidemiological surveillance, reinforcing the local health system response and building community trust in the containment measures indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The resources will focus on four priority areas identified by United Nations agencies, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO): infection prevention and control (IPC), epidemiological surveillance and contact tracing, immediate health response and community engagement.<\/p>\n
This funding adds to two ongoing humanitarian initiatives financed by Italian Development Cooperation, with a total value of EUR 5.5 million for five projects implemented by civil society organisations in the eastern provinces.
