\u201cIt is certainly impossible to stand by impotently; something different needs to be done\u201d, Minister Giulio Terzi commented on the latest Russia-China UN Security Council veto on the Syrian crisis, suggesting that an \u201curgent meeting\u201d of the Friends of Syria be called. At the end of a meeting at the foreign ministry in Rome with President of the Syrian National Council Abdulbaset Sieda, Terzi underscored how the group, which \u201cby now includes more than 100 countries\u201d could work \u201con a political plan for putting more pressure on the regime\u201d and on how \u201cto encourage truly firm support for sorely needed humanitarian initiatives\u201d, the minister explained, recalling that \u201cthe aid fund decided in previous meetings is still lacking in reasonable resources\u201d.<\/P>

Going back to the Russia-China Security Council veto, Terzi added, \u201cthe major concern is that what happened a few hours ago in the Council will give the regime the impression that it can rely on the support of some of the permanent members\u201d and that it \u201cits hands are free to perpetrate even more horrifying violence\u201d. Terzi revealed a \u201cshocking coincidence between the increase in repression in Syria and the paralysis in the adoption of measures and decisions on the question\u201d, adding that, thus far, of the Syrian population \u201c2 million have been internally displaced, 20,000 killed, 70,000 wounded, 170,000 arrested and 70,000 are missing\u201d.<\/P>

Il presidente del CNS Sieda ha affermato che “le regole Onu sono superate, perch\u00e9 risalgono alla seconda guerra mondiale e non rispettano le esigenze dei giorni nostri”. Quindi, ha chiesto agli ‘amici della Siria’ “di intervenire e di parlare con una sola voce al regime siriano che viola i diritti del popolo siriano”.<\/P>

Sieda ha poi sottolineato che gli “attacchi a Damasco ribadiscono che il regime vive i suoi ultimi giorni e si gretola dall’interno”, con continue defezioni, ed ha assicurato che “nella Siria del futuro non ci sar\u00e0 setta, gruppo o individuo che avr\u00e0 paura”. All\u2019interno del principale gruppo di opposizione siriana, infatti, \u00e8 in corso un processo di “ristrutturazione che ponga le basi per l’accesso ai rappresentanti della societ\u00e0 civile e agli altri gruppi dell’opposizione”.
