Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani opened this morning the Conference of Italian Consuls worldwide.<\/p>\n
Comprising 176 career Consulates and 330 honorary Consulates, spread across every continent, the consular network serves as the main point of contact between the State and Italian communities around the world. It provides services and support to over 7.3 million Italian citizens living abroad. Argentina, Brazil and Germany are home to the largest Italian communities. One in six Italian citizens living abroad resides in Latin America.<\/p>\n
The digitisation of consular procedures remains a priority for improving the accessibility and efficiency of services for citizens. This is being carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior to enable the integrated management of civil registration, documentation and electoral procedures for Italians living abroad. In this context, in 2025 the consular network issued 554,083 passports and 202,026 Electronic Identity Cards (CIE). Around 90% of AIRE registrations are also processed via the Fast It digital portal, which now has 2,707,260 registered users.<\/p>\n
Over 5 million voters living abroad cast their votes by post in the constitutional referendum held on 22 and 23 March 2026, with more than 200 diplomatic and consular missions involved in managing the electoral process. 80 special flights in total have been organised to transport ballot papers cast abroad to Italy.<\/p>\n
In 2025, 4,085 consular assistance operations were also carried out for Italian citizens abroad, including 125 medical repatriations. The consular offices also played a crucial role in managing the Gulf crisis of March 2026, organising the repatriation of around 10,000 Italian citizens from the Gulf countries.<\/p>\n
Another important role of the consular network is to promote the Italian language, culture and education around the world. In 2025, 304 university grants were funded across 66 countries, and 1,368 scholarships were awarded to international students and Italian students living abroad. A further 387 grants were awarded for the translation and dissemination of Italian works around the world, thereby strengthening the ties between Italy and its communities abroad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani opened this morning the Conference of Italian Consuls worldwide.
