Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani participated in the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, on Monday, June 15. The Council\u2019s works began by addressing Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine, via video link with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. The discussions focused on strengthening political and sanctions pressure on Russia and support for Ukraine. Italy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine and maintaining high pressure on Russia to achieve a just and lasting peace. Minister Tajani also reaffirmed its support for Ukraine\u2019s European path and its reconstruction, also in view of the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdansk.<\/p>\n
Significant attention was paid to the situation in the Middle East. The Ministers discussed developments in the regional crisis, relations between the European Union and the Gulf countries, maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as developments in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy\u2019s position in favour of de-escalation and a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crises, supporting the continuation of negotiations between the United States and Iran, the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and the strengthening of Operation ASPIDES. Italy also reaffirmed its commitment to the stability of Lebanon, with particular attention to strengthening State institutions, including the armed forces.<\/p>\n
The afternoon session focused on relations between the European Union and China, with a particular focus on China\u2019s role in global security and developments in the Indo-Pacific region. Minister Tajani emphasized the importance of a frank and constructive dialogue between the European Union and China, based on the protection of Europe\u2019s strategic interests and the need to address trade and investment asymmetries, ensuring the future of Europe\u2019s industrial base. The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized the need to avoid any risk of military escalation in the Indo-Pacific, a crucial region for global trade, recalling China\u2019s potential contribution to resolving major international crises, starting with Ukraine and the Gulf.<\/p>\n
