This was Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi\u2019s message \u2013 read by Under-Secretary Marta Dass\u00f9 \u2013 at the opening of the second cycle of encounters with students at the foreign ministry on the promotion of human rights.<\/P>

\u201cOur prosperity and our prestige, Terzi underscored, \u201cdepend heavily on regional and global security, which is, in turn, a function of meeting the legitimate expectations of development, freedom and dignity of all peoples\u201d, and is therefore \u201cin our own precise interests to see to it that our neighbours enjoy the benefits of rule of law and democracy\u201d. <\/P>

The minister then cited Italy\u2019s international efforts on behalf of freedom of worship, the campaign against the death penalty, women\u2019s rights, the campaign against female genital mutilation and children\u2019s rights, especially in armed conflict. Recalling \u201cthe interdependence of human rights\u201d, Terzi asserted \u201cthe need for the various actors concerned to have a shared strategy\u201d, and to work toward \u201cconsensus in multilateral forums\u201d.<\/P>

The theme of human rights is linked with equal opportunity, as Minister for Welfare Elsa Fornero underscored, who also holds the Prime Minister\u2019s Office remit for equal opportunities.
