New York, 24 September 2026<\/em><\/p>\n

On 24 September 2026, on the margins of the 81st<\/sup> session of the United Nations General Assembly, Italy and Croatia, in its current capacity as MED9 Presidency, hosted the 2nd<\/sup> meeting of the Rome Coalition for fertiliser access and food security in New York, building on its first meeting in Rome on 7 May 2026.<\/p>\n

The meeting brought together foreign ministers and high-level representatives from the MED9 group, the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Western Balkans, as well as Ukraine, alongside high-level representatives of the European Union (EU), the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the LAS and the United Nations, including FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu and FAO Deputy Director-General Maurizio Martina.<\/p>\n

Participants noted with concern the continued pressure on maritime security and global fertiliser and food supply chains, particularly as a result of heightened tensions affecting maritime routes in and around the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea. They stressed the importance of advancing towards more secure, predictable and resilient maritime routes and welcomed ongoing multilateral efforts in the region to this end, such as the EU naval operations Aspides and Atalanta.<\/p>\n

Recognising the global and interconnected nature of current food security challenges, participants also expressed concern over disruptions to food and agricultural trade in the Black Sea, a strategic corridor for grain exports, in the context of Russia\u2019s war of aggression against Ukraine. They expressed support for a more coordinated international response to mitigate the repercussions for the availability and affordability of food products and essential inputs.<\/p>\n

Particular concern was expressed about the disproportionate impacts on the world\u2019s most food-insecure regions, especially in Africa, where they risk aggravating already-critical humanitarian situations. Attention was drawn to the potential for worsening food insecurity to fuel conflicts, forced displacement and irregular migration, including in the Middle East and Europe.<\/p>\n

Participants recalled the importance of the work of the FAO, including the analysis presented at the 180th<\/sup> Session of the FAO Council on 28 April 2026, and stressed the need to build on this work through greater international coordination. The discussion focussed on making progress on keeping trade open and predictable, easing logistics constraints, diversifying supply routes and sources, and strengthening longer-term agrifood resilience.<\/p>\n

The discussions also highlighted broad support for enhanced cooperation among producing, transit, and importing countries, with a focus on expanding regional production and storage capabilities, improving connectivity, especially transport and port connectivity, and mobilising investments. Participants underlined the importance of continued engagement with the UN system, particularly the FAO, the EU, regional organisations, and international financial institutions in support of these efforts.<\/p>\n

The Co-Chairs noted and welcomed a shared commitment to maintaining the wider Mediterranean as a space of peace, cooperation, and prosperity. Broad support was expressed for the Coalition to contribute to preventing supply-chain disruptions from exacerbating food insecurity, armed conflicts and migration flows, and to complementing international efforts to address the interconnected challenges of food, supply-chain and maritime security.<\/p>\n
