Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani met at the Farnesina the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and la Francophonie of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Kayikwamba Wagner. At the heart of the talks is the relaunch of bilateral relations and the strengthening of political and economic cooperation. The two ministers first remembered Ambassador Luca Attanasio, Carabiniere Scelto Vittorio Iacovacci and the driver Mustapha Milambo, to whom scholarships for young Congolese students are also dedicated.<\/p>\n
Tajani and Kayikwamba have examined the situation in the Great Lakes region, paying particular attention to the serious humanitarian crisis and the millions of displaced persons caused by the tensions. During the meeting, the importance of protecting human rights and gradually reducing tensions in the region was stressed, including through dialogue between the parties. Tajani confirmed Italian support for ongoing diplomatic efforts and mediation initiatives. With this in mind, and in light of the Democratic Republic of the Congo\u2019s membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term, the two ministers agreed to establish a permanent consultation mechanism at the UN on issues of interest to the African continent, giving immediate instructions to their Permanent Representations in New York.<\/p>\n
On the economic front, with a trade volume approaching EUR 1 billion, Tajani underlined the important potential that still needs to be developed. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is now among the priority countries of the Mattei Plan, and Italy is ready to contribute to its growth and stability, encouraging a greater presence of Italian companies in the country.<\/p>\n
The two Ministers therefore agreed to set up a technical working group between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs in order to make practical progress with cooperation in the various areas and to reach a political agreement on critical raw materials, along the lines of the agreement signed between Minister Tajani and Secretary of State Rubio at the United Nations General Assembly. The organisation of an entrepreneurial forum in the coming months to enhance the excellence of Italian expertise has also been agreed.<\/p>\n
Finally, Tajani confirmed the commitment of Italian cooperation in the country, with initiatives in the fields of agriculture, transport, health and water supply. Italy is also supporting the response to the Ebola emergency: at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, a contribution of EUR 10 million was announced, which is in addition to previous emergency contributions to support the humanitarian response to the outbreak.<\/p>\n
