Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani met today at the Farnesina the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.<\/p>\n
As part of a broader effort to enhance Europe\u2019s capacity to respond to crises, Tajani first and foremost emphasised the importance of consolidating the European Union\u2019s partnership with the Gulf states, actively safeguarding the principle of freedom of navigation, and strengthening Europe\u2019s commitment to maritime security in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, also in order to safeguard key international maritime routes. Tajani emphasised the need to strengthen the European ASPIDES operation, to which Italy makes a major contribution. High Representative Kallas thanked Italy for its significant contribution in terms of diplomatic and military personnel and naval vessels to European security missions. The High Representative thanked Minister Tajani, pointing out that, at present, a third of the funding for the EU\u2019s international missions is provided by Italy.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the prospects for the European Union\u2019s external action and the means of making it more effective in the face of international crises were discussed. Minister Tajani presented the High Representative with an Italian proposal to make the EEAS (the European External Action Service) stronger and more effective, including towards citizens and businesses.<\/p>\n
On the subject of Ukraine and the main challenges to European security, Tajani reiterated the importance of maintaining strong European support, particularly at this time of renewed Russian military attacks, while also highlighting the need to strengthen the European response to hybrid threats and the external dimension of cybersecurity. The High Representative briefed the Minister on the meeting she had in the morning with the Holy Father.<\/p>\n
Tajani and Kallas also discussed the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU, the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific, and the European Union\u2019s relations with China and the African continent, also in light of the recent tensions between Eritrea and Ethiopia.<\/p>\n
