The countdown has begun for Italy’s appearance as Guest of Honour at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) from 28 November to 6 December: the full programme of Italy’s participation is now available online on the website of the International Book Fair, as well as on those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Culture and the Italian Publishers Association (AIE).

Italy has thus unveiled its full programme at the official launch of the 40th edition of the International Book Fair, which took place yesterday in Guadalajara and was attended on behalf of Italy by Filippo La Rosa, Deputy Director-General and Central Director for the Promotion of the Italian-speaking World, Culture and Regions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the theme of exchanges between the Italian and Latin American publishing sectors, with events designed to promote mutual understanding between the different markets and to foster new collaborations and translation projects.

Alessandro Baricco, in conversation with Valeria Luiselli – one of Mexico’s leading contemporary writers – will kick off the literary programme, which focuses not only on Italy but on the entire Fair, confirming our country’s central role in this year’s edition: the event is scheduled for 29 November at 12.30 pm, at the Juan Rulfo Auditorium.

With over 120 literary and professional events featuring some 60 authors, as well as representatives from the Italian and international publishing worlds, Italy is once again taking centre stage in Guadalajara, eighteen years after it last served as Guest of Honour. It does so in the name of Umberto Eco: it is his phrase – “The world speaks to us like a great book” – with which the country is presenting itself at the largest international book fair dedicated to Spanish-speaking markets. Alongside the literary and professional events, the programme is enriched by over fifteen exhibitions and artistic performances, nine concerts and a range of other initiatives, from gastronomy and cinema to academic exchanges.

The beating heart of the initiative will be the Italian Pavilion at the Fair, where over thirty publishers will be exhibiting and where there will be a bookshop area displaying books by Italian authors in their original language and in Spanish translation.

Every year, the International Book Fair attracts over 800 writers, 18,000 publishing professionals, 2,800 publishing houses from over 60 countries and an audience of nearly one million visitors. Across more than 35,000 square metres of exhibition space, over 1,600 events will take place over the course of nine days.
