The challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the need for rules to keep its use under human control were the focus of an informal discussion at the Australian Prime Minister’s Sydney residence. Franciscan philosopher and theologian Father Paolo Benanti met Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, accompanied by the Ambassador of Italy to Canberra, Nicola Lener, and Consul General in Sydney, Gianluca Rubagotti.

Father Benanti is in Australia at the invitation of the Embassy of Italy to take part in a series of roundtable discussions on artificial intelligence and ethics, organised as part of the commemorations of the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis. He shared with the Prime Minister his reflections on the need to keep human beings and their freedom of choice at the centre of efforts to govern the development of AI, in keeping with the ideas expressed in Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas.

The Prime Minister expressed agreement with that view, emphasising Australia’s commitment to ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits humanity rather than harming it. Australia was the first country in the world to introduce a ban on social media access for children under 16. Albanese also made reference to his recent remarks on those issues at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During his visit, Father Benanti also took part in a roundtable discussion at the National Press Club in Canberra with Andrew Leigh, Assistant Minister for Productivity and Competition, and met Andrew Charlton, Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and Digital Economy, in Sydney.

The challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the need for rules to keep its use under human control were the focus of an informal discussion at the Australian Prime Minister’s Sydney residence.
