The Ambassador of Italy to Bulgaria, Marcello Apicella, opened the exhibition ‘St Francis: the Story of a Face’ at the historic headquarters of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The exhibition was organised by the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia, under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and in collaboration with CMS.Cultura of Bologna.

The exhibition, curated by Livia Ficoroni and Giulia Fortunato, offers a visual journey which, from the late 13th century to the present day, traces the human and spiritual story of Italy’s Patron Saint.

In his speech, Ambassador Apicella emphasised that the exhibition forms part of the commemorations marking the eighth centenary of the death of St Francis and represents an opportunity to highlight the cultural ties between Italy and Bulgaria. Indeed, the figure of the Saint of Assisi serves to forge a cultural and spiritual bridge between East and West. Despite the chronological and geographical distance between their respective works, the figures of St Francis, Patron Saint of Italy, and St John of Rila, the wonderworker, Patron Saint of Bulgaria, share a profound ethos: the choice of solitude and humility, the renunciation of material possessions, and harmony with nature.

The Ambassador also invited the audience to attend the lecture by Mons. Francesco Braschi, Deputy Prefect and Doctor of Sciences of the Ambrosiana Library, entitled ‘Little Brother Francis – brother to all, a giant of humanity and faith’, scheduled for 23 October at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as part of the programme of events for the Week of the Italian Language in the World.

The Ambassador of Italy to Bulgaria, Marcello Apicella, opened the exhibition ‘St Francis: the Story of a Face’ at the historic headquarters of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
