Ministers from over 30 countries have adopted a joint statement on the risk of famine in Sudan, which is facing a severe deterioration in food security due to the conflict, with 19.5 million people \u2013 41 per cent of the population \u2013 experiencing severe acute food insecurity, of whom 5 million are in a state of emergency.<\/p>\n
To avert the risk of famine, the signatory Ministers urge the parties to the conflict to remove obstacles to humanitarian assistance, ensuring safe, rapid and unimpeded access for aid workers; to refrain from targeting humanitarian personnel and civilian infrastructure; and to facilitate relief operations along all transit routes, including air access to Darfur. They urge the international community and financial and development institutions to urgently increase funding.<\/p>\n
