This was Minister Giulio Terzi\u2019s assertion on the television broadcast of \u201cOtto e mezzo\u201d, where he cited the \u201crevival of credibility\u201d and \u201cfull support for Italy\u201d and \u201cits government\u2019s actions\u201d of European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, on a visit to Rome at a special moment \u201ca few hours after the downgrade\u201d by Standard & Poor\u2019s.<\/P>

In any case, according to Terzi, the downgrade of Italy and other European countries is not the precursor of a dollar-euro war. \u201cI would be careful about believing this to be a strike against the euro, which is not the wish of the U.S. administration\u201d, the Minister stated, underscoring that the U.S. had expressed itself \u201cclearly on the need for a strong Europe, both economically and on the security level\u201d. Moreover, in Terzi\u2019s opinion, there is no alternative to the euro. \u201cI am convinced, as is the government\u201d, he said, \u201cthat the euro is an irreversible process; European integration goes forward and there are no points of return, and \u201cthere is no need to be overly influenced\u201d by the ratings agencies, the minister added.<\/P>

Terzi downplayed the postponement of the Italy-Germany-France trilateral summit, saying that \u201cthree-way consultations\u201d between Monti, Merkel and Sarkozy were \u201ccontinuing\u201d and that there would be a \u201cthree-party examination\u201d before the 30 January European Council.
