Alfano to the Security Council: \u201cProsecuting Daesh crimes in Iraq to promote reconciliation and to overcome the desire for revenge&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, attended a meeting today of the UN Security Council which adopted a resolution establishing an investigative team of experts led by a Special Envoy with the mandate to collect and preserve evidence related to potential war crimes and crimes against humanity that Daesh has perpetrated in Iraq.\u00a0\u201cToday we have taken a major step in the fight against Daesh and more generally to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Iraq and the Iraqi people have paid a huge price to the blind fury of ISIL. We commend the courage of the Iraqi people and the commitment shown by the authorities in Baghdad\u00a0 to uphold the rule of law. It is our duty to bring to justice the perpetrators of atrocious crimes,&#8221;\u00a0 Alfano said in his address to the Security Council which was attended, among others, by the Iraqi Minister Jafaari.\u201cNever before the world has witnessed such a systematic use of heinous brutality &#8211; killings, attacks and violence,&#8221; Alfano continued. He added, &#8220;This is why it is our collective responsibility to fight against Daesh till the end. Not only on a military level,\u00a0 but also from the point of view of ideology and narrative. We must work to achieve stability and promote an inclusive dialogue.&#8221; \u201cItaly, a partner of Iraq, has contributed to the Global Coalition against Daesh by training over 30,000 Iraqi military and police officers. Today we are ready to support the Special Envoy and its investigative team.
