Second day of mission to Cyprus for Foreign Affairs Undersecretary of State, Vincenzo Amendola, who\u00a0participated today in the 127th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The meeting\u00a0focused on\u00a0 populism, migrations,\u00a0countering terrorism, conflicts and crises in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amendola referred to the Report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, “on\u00a0 state of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Europe”\u00a0and\u00a0shared his\u00a0call for open, democratic and inclusive societies as a tool to counter the increasing tide of populism. Moreover, the Undersecretary underlined the importance of working together \u00a0on the issue of migration, with determination and with a spirit of solidarity.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In supporting the plan of action adopted by the Councill of Europe for the protection of refugees and unaccompanied minors, Undersecretary Amendola added that in the past month of March Italy passed a law\u00a0introducing a Comprehensive set of rules regulating the\u00a0reception and protection of foreign unaccompanied minors. The Undersecretary spoke of\u00a0the actions carried out by Italy to counter terrorism, and confirmed Italy’s \u00a0full support to the initiatives of the Council of Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n
During his speech, Undersecretary Amendola highlighted the Italian commitment\u00a0to \u00a0protect cultural heritage and\u00a0counter the trafficking in\u00a0cultural property, which\u00a0also funds terrorism.\u00a0 These actions, which Italy is pursuing\u00a0 as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, are part of the Italo-French initiative, \u00a0that includes\u00a0the Resolution 2347,\u00a0\u00a0unanimously approved in March, on the protection of cultural heritage and the fight against the illicit trafficking\u00a0of cultural property.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lastly, the Undersecretary underlined the central role played by\u00a0the political dialogue with neighbouring countries, also as a tool for the promotion of human rights.
