At the initiative of Italy and of the European Commission, the so-called Valletta Trust Fund \u2013 the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for stability and addressing root causes of irregular migration and displaced persons in Africa \u2013 approved a \u20ac 50 million programme to provide socio-economic support to the population in 24 Libyan municipalities.<\/p>\n
Said programme confirms Italy\u2019s closeness to the whole of the Libyan people and their central and local institutions and responds to the immediate needs of the population, in line with the bottom-up approach proposed by the United Nations Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative, Ghassan Salam\u00e9.<\/p>\n
The programme, which was jointly drafted by Italy and the European Commission on the basis of the requests made by Libyan authorities, aims to facilitate access to basic services by the population, especially the most vulnerable segments, including migrants.<\/p>\n
The Italian Cooperation service will be in charge of providing technical assistance and socio-economic support to the initiative, also through the involvement of civil society organizations.
