This morning the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, had a telephone conversation with the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian.<\/p>\n
During the conversation, which was scheduled during the bilateral meeting between the two ministers last Monday in Rome, Le Drian reported on the outcome of the initiative launched by French President Emmanuel Macron to organise a meeting between Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and General Khalifa Haftar in Paris yesterday.<\/p>\n
The French foreign minister defined the Paris agreement a \u201cgood level text\u201d whose enforcement however remains to be monitored, and specified that it acknowledges the Shkirat Agreements and undertakes to fully support the new United Nations Special Representative Ghassan Salam\u00e9 in his action in Libya\u2019s stabilisation process.<\/p>\n
Minister Le Drian recalled that President Macron publicly mentioned the meeting between the two foreign ministers, Le Drian and Alfano, highlighting the commonality of opinions with Italy and the need that the political process now be conducted under the guidance of the new UN Special Representative Ghassan Salam\u00e9.<\/p>\n
Minister Alfano responded underscoring \u201cthe importance that every future initiative on Libya be conducted within the framework of the action of the United Nations and of its Special Representative, so as to facilitate Libya\u2019s national reconciliation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
