The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, met with Giovanni Raimondi, the President of the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic Foundation.<\/p>\n
The talks \u2013 which followed Mr Alfano\u2019s meeting with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan De Mistura \u2013 focused on “Ospedali aperti in Siria” (\u201cOpen Hospitals in Syria\u201d), the project launched by the Agostino Gemelli University Polyclinic Foundation and the NGO AVSI to support three hospital facilities in Syria, two of which in Damascus and one in Aleppo. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a very important initiative \u2013 said Minister Alfano \u2013 which is evidence of our Country\u2019s special attention for the most vulnerable populations, an attention that tangibly translates into a qualified support in delivering health care services and in providing personnel training.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this respect, this morning I expressed to Staffan de Mistura our concern for the alarming numbers of the Syrian crisis: 350,000 dead, 1 million injured, 5 million refugees and 6 million internally displaced persons. It is a humanitarian emergency that can no longer wait. The project launched by the Gemelli Foundation and AVSI is a first important response in this direction,\u201d concluded Mr Alfano at the end of the meeting with Mr Raimondi. \u00a0<\/p>\n
