Senegal: the \u201cBus rapid transit\u201d project kicks off in Dakar with bus-only lanes<\/p>\n
At an event organised by the Executive Council of Urban Transport in Dakar, Senegal’s Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Abdoulaye Daouda Diallo, officially announced the launch of the Bus Rapid Transit project designed to create a new bus transport system with dedicated bus lanes. The project is one of the goals set in the country\u2019s development plan to improve urban transport and connect the centre of Dakar with the outskirts.<\/p>\n
In the plan presented by the Government, the Bus Rapid Transit system will extend over an\u00a0area of\u00a018.3 km, with 144 vehicles and 23 stops. It will serve 14 Municipalities and journey times will be halved compared to now.<\/p>\n
The project was officially launched to meet an increasing number of requests by local inhabitants to increase connections between the suburbs and Dakar city centre. The Bus Rapid Transit system is forecast to carry 300,000 passengers per day and reduce the inconvenience caused by heavy traffic in the city centre. Minister Diallo said that work is set to begin at the beginning of 2019.<\/p>\n
The total cost for the project will be 300 billion CFA francs (450 million euros), mostly financed by the World Bank with 184 billion Fcfa.
