{"id":51333,"date":"2017-05-17T14:20:55","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T12:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/comunicati\/2017\/05\/scienza-per-la-pace-in-medio-oriente-2\/"},"modified":"2017-05-17T14:20:55","modified_gmt":"2017-05-17T12:20:55","slug":"scienza-per-la-pace-in-medio-oriente-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/approfondimenti\/2017\/05\/scienza-per-la-pace-in-medio-oriente-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Science for peace in the Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The international multidisciplinary laboratory\u00a0<strong>SESAME,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0acronym of\u00a0<i>Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East,<\/i>\u00a0was officially inaugurated in Allan,\u00a0<strong>Jordan,\u00a0<\/strong>on 16 May 2017<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>The facility is a third-generation synchrotron light laboratory comparable to a \u201c<strong>CERN in the Mediterranean<\/strong><i>\u201d.<\/i>\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ribbon-cutting ceremony, celebrated by\u00a0<strong>King\u00a0Abdallah II of Jordan<\/strong>, was attended by the eight member Countries in this important common project such as the\u00a0<strong>National Palestinian Authority, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan,\u00a0\u200bIran, Israel, Pakistan and Turkey<\/strong>, in addition to the International Organisations\u00a0<strong>CERN, IAEA<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.it\/url?sa=t&#038;rct=j&#038;q=&#038;esrc=s&#038;source=web&#038;cd=4&#038;cad=rja&#038;uact=8&#038;ved=0ahUKEwi8tripyPbTAhUFPxQKHSlbCawQFgg9MAM&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fit.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FAgenzia_internazionale_per_l%2527energia_atomica&#038;usg=AFQjCNHUEDNfCR1iga648CbE8bEosOINFg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Atomic Energy Agency<\/a>),<strong>\u00a0ICTP\u00a0<\/strong>(International Centre for Theoretical Physics)<strong>, APS<\/strong>\u00a0(<i>American\u00a0Physical Society<\/i>)\u00a0 and the 16 Observer Countries, including the United States, Germany, Great Britain, China, Russia, Japan and\u00a0<strong>Italy.<\/strong>\u00a0Indeed, it is thanks to the intuition of Italian physicist\u00a0<strong>Sergio Fubini<\/strong>, that the idea arose in 1995 to set up a laboratory based on scientific and technological cooperation among Middle Eastern Countries. Ever since then Italy, aware of the importance of\u00a0<strong>science diplomacy<\/strong>\u00a0in this region of the\u00a0<strong>Mediterranean,\u00a0<\/strong>albeit an Observer Country, has contributed to the success of the initiative, also by financing the project through the provision of experimental apparatuses, under the leadership of the\u00a0<strong>Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN)\u00a0<\/strong>and of the Trieste-based\u00a0<strong>ELETTRA-Sincrotrone<\/strong>. Moreover, Italy is the only Observer Country\u00a0in the SESAME project that made an ad hoc institutional financial contribution through the Ministry of Education, University and Research (<strong>MIUR<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The results obtained through this joint effort are continuing under the leadership of SESAME\u2019s Scientific Director, Italian\u00a0<strong>Giorgio Paolucci,\u00a0<\/strong>who coordinates the experiments with\u00a0synchrotron light, a powerful source of matter-originating high-intensity electromagnetic radiation released by charged sub-atomic particles moving along a curved trajectory. It is obtained in large particle accelerators and can be applied to various fields,\u00a0<strong>from basic physics to chemistry, from life sciences to cultural property, from molecular biology to ICT.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWith today\u2019s inauguration, SESAME converts a dream, which many thought to be impossible to realise, into the first large research facility in the Middle East,\u201d<\/i>\u00a0said\u00a0Giorgio Paolucci, scientific director of the SESAME<i>.\u00a0<\/i>He went on:\u00a0<i>\u201cIt is a great thrill for me to have contributed by bringing with me the experience of Italian research.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>Attending the ceremony in representation of Italy were also present the Undersecretary of State of the Minister of Education, University and Research,\u00a0<strong>Vito De Filippo<\/strong>, the Italian Ambassador to Jordan,\u00a0<strong>Giovanni Brauzzi<\/strong>, the Director General of CERN,\u00a0<strong>Fabiola Giannotti<\/strong>, the Principal Director for Innovation and Research of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI),\u00a0<strong>Fabrizio Nicoletti<\/strong>\u00a0and the President of INFN, Prof\u00a0<strong>Fernando Ferroni.<\/strong><i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s inauguration of the SESAME marks a success story that began approximately 25 years ago under the aegis of UNESCO and taking the CERN as the model to follow. But the future is already clear: the two initial lines of research (corresponding to two beams of light) will be compounded with another two by 2019. Furthermore, thanks to the future solar power plant, SESAME is expected to establish a new record for being\u00a0<strong>the first laboratory in the world to be entirely powered by renewable energy sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SESAME is a lot more than a simple \u201claboratory\u201d because, in addition to being used in scientific research and to develop new technologies, it pursues a constant intercultural dialogue aimed at building peace in the Middle Eastern region thanks to an\u00a0<strong>open and barrier-free approach<\/strong>\u00a0that has brought around the same table people who are unlikely to cooperate on many issues.
