{"id":53373,"date":"2016-05-18T15:08:06","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T13:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/comunicati\/2016\/05\/gentiloni-africa-e-mediterraneo_0-2\/"},"modified":"2016-05-18T15:08:06","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T13:08:06","slug":"gentiloni-africa-e-mediterraneo_0-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/approfondimenti\/2016\/05\/gentiloni-africa-e-mediterraneo_0-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Gentiloni: \u201cAfrica and the Mediterranean are our national interest\u201d\u200b"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;It is our national interest to have the Mediterranean and Africa as the priority areas of reference of foreign policy,\u201d said Minister Gentiloni in his opening remarks to the Italy-Africa Conference taking place this morning at the Foreign Ministry, when greeting the more than 50 delegations from the African continent. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal \u2013 he added \u2013 is to make our foreign policy increasingly coherent with our history and our geography because there is nothing fortuitous in our Country\u2019s actions.\u201d The Foreign Minister went on: \u201cWe see Africa as a land of opportunities that will play a leading role in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century.\u201d He added: \u201cWe Italians are working to transmit this awareness to Europe, which must give priority to Africa.\u201d This is why, he said, \u201cwe will ask the upcoming European Council meeting in June to pass a broad spectrum operating plan to implement pilot projects on the short term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ministerial Conference was opened by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who highlighted the role played by Italy as \u201cthe bridge between Africa and Europe\u201d thanks to its geography, history and culture.<\/p>\n<p>President Mattarella said: \u201cThe globalisation process has further tightened the ties between Africa and Europe.
