Our country was elected along with Japan, China, South Korea, Greece, the UK, the United States, Panama, the Russian Federation and Norway during the General Assembly currently under way in London.<\/p>\n<p>The success of Italy\u2019s candidacy, a member since 1957, bears witness to the important role our country plays in the field of maritime navigation development, marine environmental protection, security and counter-piracy.<\/p>\n<p>Election to the IMO Council is also recognition of Italy\u2019s generous commitment to maritime personnel training and technical cooperation with developing countries, as well as of rescue and assistance activities in the Mediterranean with the intensification of migration flows from North Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Italy was re-elected today to the Category-A Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which consists of \u201c10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services\u201d.
