The failure was caused by the diverging views of the States Party, especially on the preparation of a conference on the creation of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).<\/p>\n<p>Italy continues to place the utmost importance on strengthening the NPT as a cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation system.
