The three titles in question are \u201cRosso\u201d (\u201cRed\u201d, 1963), \u201cIl percorso\u201d (\u201cPathway\u201d, 1967) and \u201cLo stemma\u201d (\u201cCoat of Arms\u201d, 1971).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/mae\/resource\/img\/2021\/08\/afro_appro.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"509\" alt=\"afro appro\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Afro is one of the great Italian artists of the mid-20th century. He participated in the \u201cGroup of Eight\u201d (1952-4), and his work was generally ascribed to the Informal period. In his painting, influenced by experiences in the United States, Shapes and colours became tools for a free re-evocation of memories and emotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/mae\/resource\/img\/2021\/08\/afro_1.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"256\" alt=\"afro 1\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The mosaic technique had been familiar to Afro from the outset of his career and, indeed, from 1941 to 1945 he taught it at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice. During those same years, he also produced the cartoons for the mosaics at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome\u2019s EUR District. Afro returns to the mosaic in the last years of his life, when the technique appeared to him particularly suited to express the final stages of his research, then focused on more stylized forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/mae\/resource\/img\/2021\/08\/afro_2.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"376\" alt=\"afro 2\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three mosaics by Afro (1912-76) have been restored and are now involved in an important reorganization of the Farnesina Collection.
