With the situation worsening dramatically with the passing of every hour, Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini today renewed her appeal for a stop to the armed confrontation between Israel and Gaza. \u201cFor days now we have been witness to indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas. Hamas\u2019 threat to the security of Israel with its continuous rocket launches against civilian targets is unacceptable. And the daily toll of Palestinian victims is increasingly heavy and intolerable\u201d, the minister asserted.<\/P>

\u201cThe potential for the situation to spin out of control is becoming more and more concrete, with risks to the stability of an entire region already sorely tried by other crises\u201d, she continued.<\/P>
\n
\u201cHence the need to immediately reinstate the ceasefire. First of all in order to restore calm on the ground and ensure the safety of civilians. And then to allow the resumption of talks, which is the only path to a sustainable solution to the conflict\u201d, she underscored, \u201cthose working against unity, to divide and destroy, must be isolated. Difficult times call for courageous choices\u201d.<\/P>

\u201cWe extend our solidarity to the suffering populations, and Italy, not least as duty President of the Council of the EU, is ready to support an EU role alongside the international community to achieve a ceasefire and facilitate the relaunch of peace negotiations\u201d, she insisted. <\/P>
