{"id":68178,"date":"2021-12-21T14:57:23","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T13:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/\/2021\/12\/hong-kong-elections-december-2021-g7-foreign-ministers-joint-statement\/"},"modified":"2021-12-21T14:58:08","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T13:58:08","slug":"hong-kong-elections-december-2021-g7-foreign-ministers-joint-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/en\/sala_stampa\/archivionotizie\/comunicati\/2021\/12\/hong-kong-elections-december-2021-g7-foreign-ministers-joint-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong elections, December 2021: G7 foreign ministers joint statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We, the G7 Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America and the High Representative of the European Union, noting the outcome of the Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong which took place on 19 December 2021, express our grave concern over the erosion of democratic elements of the Special Administrative Region\u2019s electoral system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The package of changes to the electoral system introduced earlier this year in Hong Kong, including reduction of the number of directly elected seats and establishment of a new vetting process to severely restrict the choice of candidates on the ballot paper, undermined Hong Kong\u2019s high degree of autonomy under the \u2018One Country, Two Systems\u2019 principle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We strongly reiterate our call on China to act in accordance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration and its other legal obligations and respect fundamental rights and freedoms in Hong Kong, as provided for in the Basic Law.
