Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi received US Special Envoy for the Middle East David Hale in Rome today.<\/P>

The minister assured Hale of Italy\u2019s continuing and \u201cstrongly convinced\u201d support for US efforts at encouraging the resumption of direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, referring to this as \u201cthe only path to relaunching the peace process and the pursuit of a two-State solution \u2013 Israel and Palestine \u2013 living side by side in peace and security with the other nations of the region\u201d.<\/P>

Expressing his hope in the European Union\u2019s increasingly incisive action in fostering the revival of negotiations, the minister asserted that, in outlining the negotiation framework, defence of Israel\u2019s legitimate need for security would have be to be assured, which, as Terzi pointed out, is \u201can essential element in the success of any negotiation\u201d. At the same time, Terzi informed Hale of \u201cconcerns about several of Israel\u2019s decisions regarding the settlements, which could complicate prospects for the talks\u201d. <\/P>

Terzi also made reference, with \u201cstrong apprehension\u201d to the \u201cPalestinian Authorities\u2019 difficult financial situation\u201d, and hoped in this regard in the \u201cstrong and concerted commitment of the United States, the European Union and the Arab League member states to improving the living conditions of the Palestinian people\u201d.<\/P>
