Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi spoke today by telephone with President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition Mouaz Khatib to confirm Italy\u2019s support for a Syrian people in the throes of the humanitarian crisis caused by the Assad regime.<\/P>

\u201cWe cannot turn a blind eye to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Syrian regime\u2019s brutal use of violence against its own people\u201d, affirmed Minister Terzi, as he assured Khatib of Italy\u2019s maximum commitment to providing concrete assistance to the population and, in particular, to women and children, in an effort to deal with a humanitarian crisis that worsens daily with the onset of winter. In anticipation of the meeting of the Friends of Syria in Marrakesh on 11 and 12 December, where the main international partners are to confront the question of humanitarian aid, Minister Terzi himself will discussed the issue tomorrow at the Italo-French bilateral summit. <\/P>

Khatib thanked Italy, one of the first Western countries to recognise the Coalition as the Syrian people\u2019s legitimate representative, for the solidarity and assistance offered to the Syrian people and opposition coalition in the areas of humanitarian aid and institution building.<\/P>
