The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) has launched the\u00a0<\/span>project: \u201cHugo Pratt. L\u2019eredit\u00e0, l\u2019opera e la biografia\u201d (\u201cHugo Pratt. Legacy, Work, and Biography\u201d)\u00a0<\/strong>to promote\u00a0<\/span>the Italian language and culture in the world<\/strong>\u00a0through one of Italy\u2019s most important cartoon artists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Promoted by the\u00a0Directorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy<\/strong>\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0Cong Sa<\/strong>\u00a0(the company that holds the copyright of Pratt\u2019s work), the project targets the students of the 49 Italian schools in the world and of the 85 Italian Sections in foreign schools, inviting them to participate in a\u00a0contest\u00a0<\/strong>to write\u00a0a brand-new adventure of<\/strong>\u00a0Corto Maltese<\/strong>, Pratt\u2019s best-known character, in the form of a short story or a storyboard which will then be drawn by cartoon artists selected by Cong Sa. The stories that classify in second or third place will have their comic cover page published. The classes entered in the contest will attend three briefings with writer Marco Steiner and designer Giuseppe Camuncoli.<\/p>\n

The winning stories of the contest will be exhibited\u00a0<\/strong>among the contemporary artworks of the\u00a0\u201cFarnesina Collection\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>at the MAECI and will later be included in a\u00a0travelling exhibition on Corto Maltese<\/strong>\u00a0with Pratt\u2019s panels and the illustrations by subsequent designers over the years, to be hosted by\u00a0Italian Cultural Institutes\u00a0<\/strong>between 2023 and 2024.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHugo Pratt is ideal for a project that aims to explore and promote Italian culture and history and to relaunch a dialogue between generations. For me, as for many others, the passion for this artist starts from a gift in childhood:\u00a0Una ballata del mare salato<\/em>\u00a0(The Ballad of the Salty Sea<\/em>), in which the principal character Corto Maltese appears for the first time\u201d says Alessandro De Pedys, Deputy Director General\/Principal Director for the Promotion of the Italian Culture and Language, in the podcast dedicated to the project to be published on the channel Spreaker\u00a0Voci dalla Farnesina<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bond between\u00a0Hugo Pratt<\/strong>\u00a0and Italian schools abroad\u00a0has its roots in the remote past dating back to when he attended the\u00a0Italian school in Addis Ababa in his childhood.\u00a0<\/strong>This is why, as part of the project, research is now underway at the Farnesina\u2019s Historical Diplomatic Archive which contains unpublished documents on the artist\u2019s biography, with a view to organizing an archival exhibition dedicated to him.<\/p>\n
