To mark the occasion of the\u00a02022 World Football Cup<\/strong>, and to celebrate the close ties between\u00a0Ireland and Italy<\/strong>\u00a0in the finals of past tournaments, the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin, with the support of the\u00a0Embassy of Italy in Ireland<\/strong>, is bringing an exhibition to\u00a0Cork and Dublin<\/strong>\u00a0which will showcase original material covering the\u00a01990, 1994 and 2002 World Cup<\/strong>s.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0November 13th<\/strong>, the exhibition\u00a0“Chasing the ball” A display of football stickers featuring Ireland and Italy at the World Cup 1990-2002<\/strong>\u00a0will be launched in\u00a0St. Peter’s Exhibition Hall in Cork<\/strong>. The project is promoted by the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin and curated by\u00a0FMAV – Museo della Figurina in Modena<\/strong>\u00a0(Italy).<\/p>\n

The exhibition will display a series of\u00a0albums, stickers, drawings and original materials<\/strong>\u00a0which are related to the 1990, 1994 and 2002 editions of the World Cup. Ireland and Italy will be the protagonists, with their teams, players, opponents and matches played. It is a unique opportunity to re-experience an\u00a0historic moment for our two countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some\u00a080 albums, 18 drawing<\/strong>\u00a0representing the goals scored by the\u00a0Irish teams<\/strong>, and much more, will be on display. These cover the\u00a0three World Cup tournaments<\/strong>\u00a0and comprise hundreds of trading cards. However, the on-pitch meeting between Ireland and Italy is a fascinating crossroads that goes beyond these tournaments. Sometimes the encounters turned into personal bonds as the players went on to represent more than football.<\/p>\n

The items on display have been loaned from the\u00a0Gianni Bellini<\/strong>\u00a0collection, with Bellini widely considered to be the world’s leading collector of football trading cards and stickers. As a collector, he has attracted the attention of major international publications, including L’Equipe and the football magazine FourFourTwo, in addition to TV networks like CBS, CNN and the History Channel.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0free<\/strong>\u00a0Exhibition will remain open until the\u00a07th of December 2022.<\/strong>\u00a0It will then be moved to\u00a0Dublin Castle’s Printworks Building<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a05th of January to the 22nd, 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The aim of the exhibition<\/strong>\u00a0is to give visitors the chance to feel as if they actually attended the matches themselves and get to know the\u00a0great World Cup players<\/strong>, most especially the tournament played in\u00a0Italy<\/strong>, the first in which\u00a0Ireland<\/strong>\u00a0reached the knockout stages.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a01990<\/strong>\u00a0tournament, as well as the following one held in\u00a01994<\/strong>\u00a0in the United States of America, the two national teams faced each other in matches that resulted in moments of great football and passion that delighted the supporters of both nations. These three tournaments are firmly imprinted in the minds of\u00a0Irish<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Italian<\/strong>\u00a0fans alike for similar and sometimes contrasting reasons.
