The African Continent deserves wider representation in the UN Security Council says Uniting for Consensus Group.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Representatives to the African Union of the countries of the \u201cUniting for Consensus\u201d Group (UfC) represented in Addis Ababa met to discuss this.<\/p>\n
Uniting for Consensus is a group of countries from different regions of the world (Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, San Marino, Spain, T\u00fcrkiye) that share a conviction that the United Nations Security Council must be reformed to make it more democratic, accountable, representative, transparent and effective.<\/p>\n
The meeting was an occasion to reiterate the UfC commitment to achieve progress towards comprehensive Security Council reform that strengthens and enhances both regional representation and equitable geographical distribution in the Council.<\/p>\n
In particular, UfC members underlined the need to address the historical injustice towards Africa and ensure stronger representation for the African continent. Uniting for Consensus\u2019s reform proposal would give the Group of African States the largest number of elected seats in an enlarged Council.<\/p>\n
Permanent Representatives also recalled the inclusive character of the UfC proposal and its benefits for all regional groups. By adding only non-permanent seats to the Council, the proposal allows for more rotation among UN Member States within regional groups, ensuring that all voices are heard and no one is left behind.<\/p>\n
