Rome MED – Mediterranean Dialogues 2019

The Fifth Edition of the Rome MED Conference – Mediterranean Dialogues, will be held in Rome’s Hotel Parco dei Principi, on Via Gerolamo Frescobaldi 5, from 5 to 7 December 2019. The Conference is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI). MED Dialogues will take place over 3 days and will be attended by more than 40 world leaders, including Presidents, Prime Ministers and Ministers and nearly 1000 entrepreneurs, academicians, representatives of major international organisations as well as scholars and experts from over 50 Countries. This year too, the more than 40 Conference sessions are organised around four pillars: "Shared security”, “Shared prosperity”, “Migration” and “Culture and civil society”. On 6 December, the Conference will open with remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi DI MAIO, and will close on Saturday 7 December with remarks by Prime Minister Giuseppe CONTE. The other scheduled speakers at the Conference include Idriss Déby ITNO, the President of the Republic of Chad, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim AL-THANI, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, and numerous Foreign Ministers including: Sabri BOUKADOUM, Algeria; Sameh SHOUKRY, Egypt; Ayman SAFADI, Jordan; Subrahmanyam JAISHANKAR, India; Mohamed Taher SIALA, Libya; Carmelo ABELA, Malta; Riyad AL-MALKI, Palestine; Sergey LAVROV, Russia; Miroslav CERAR, Slovenia; Sabri BACHTOBJI, Tunisia; Mevlut ÇAVUŞOĞLU, Turkey; as well as Tawakkol KARMAN, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Yemen; Paolo GENTILONI, Commissioner for Economic Affairs, European Commission; Geir O. PEDERSEN, Special Envoy for Syria, United Nations; Ghassan SALAME’, UN Secretary General Special Representative in Libya, and the President of ISPI, Giampiero MASSOLO.
MED Dialogues intends to contribute to tackling the challenges and opportunities posed by the “enlarged Mediterranean”, by highlighting the great opportunities that it offers by putting in place a positive agenda. The debate will focus on strategic issues such as the principal regional crises – with a focus on Libya and Syria – the challenges posed by ongoing transition processes, the geopolitical competition between different regional players, terrorism and the fate of ISIS , managing migration flows and the geopolitical impact of climate change, the new energy scenarios, and the role of investments and technological innovation in the region. To enhance the contribution of ideas and proposals, in the past few months, 10 preparatory meetings (Towards MED) were organised in Doha, Geneva, Brussels, Rome, Abu Dhabi, Moscow, Beirut, Washington, New York and Riyadh. Nine Forums dedicated to specific topics associated with the enlarged Mediterranean will also be hosted at the Hotel Parco dei Principi on 5 December.
