The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation promotes the dissemination of Italian publications and films abroad by granting subsidies for translation and dubbing/subtitling, which represent a strategic tool in the promotion of Italian language and culture abroad.
The Foreign Ministry grants two types of financial incentives:
- Grants for the translation of unpublished Italian works abroad and to the production, dubbing and subtitling of short and feature films and TV series;
- Awards to Italian works translated abroad.
In 2018 we gave 120 grants and 3 awards. In 2017, 131 grants and 2 awards were given.
The candidacies must be submitted by May 23 of every year to the Italian Cultural Institutes and to the Italian diplomatic and consular missions abroad according to the procedures established in the Call for candidates.
On July 10, 2019 a meeting of the Consultative Working Group for the Promotion of Italian Culture and Language - Publishing and Audiovisual Media Section - was held at the Foreign Ministry to give awards and grants for the dissemination of Italian books abroad and for the translation of literary and scientific works, as well as for the production, dubbing and subtitling of short and feature films of television series intended for the mass media, for the financial year 2019. The minutes of the meeting and the results of the selection are available here. Failure to include the application is tantamount to notification of non-assignment of the grant or award.
Further information can be obtained from the Italian Cultural Institutes or from the Italian diplomatic and consular missions abroad.
Every year, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT) grants national translation Awards. The deadline by which to submit candidacies is set at the last working day of the month of February. More information is available in the Call for candidates and in the dedicated section of the MiBACT website.
