Some initiatives have recently been completed in the fields of health, agriculture, education, culture and training:
Health – the north wing of the government hospital in Hebron (Princess Alia) has been restructured and renovated in collaboration with UNDP thanks to Italian government funding of 7 million euros.
Health – on 17 March 2008 Italy organised a humanitarian convoy to deliver essential emergency supplies and medical-surgical help to the hospitals of the Gaza Strip, at a cost of 400,000 euros.
Agriculture – Funding of 1.1million euros for Quality Olive Oil production in the West Bank. The key goals of this programme, which benefits over 400 olive growers and 30 oil mill managers, are to export Palestinian extra-virgin and organic olive oil that meets the highest international quality standards.
Agriculture – Italian cooperation, in collaboration with UNDP and the Palestinian Ministry for Agriculture, launched a project in March 2008 to develop the agricultural land in the southern part of the West Bank. The Italian government’s contribution amounts to over 2 million euros.
Education – 138 primary and secondary school teachers from Nablus Province have taken part in Information & Communication Technology (ICT) training courses to develop new teaching methods and facilitate learning for pupils. The initiative, promoted by Italian cooperation, is part of the Support for the Palestinian Education Program (SPEP), value about 7 million euros, implemented through UNDP/PAPP with the collaboration of the Palestinian Ministry of Education.
Training – Fifty officials from the Ministry for Palestinian Women’s Affairs benefited from a training course in the management and planning of women’s policies. The course was promoted by the Italian Cooperation Office in Jerusalem as part of the “Tamkeen: Fighting poverty by empowering and supporting Palestinian women” project, to which the Italian government has contributed 540,000 euros.
Culture – the city of Jericho hosted a seminar on “Conservation and Enhancement of the Cultural Heritage. A journey from the Palestinian Territories to Jordan”. The workshop was promoted by the Italian Consulate General/Development Cooperation Office in Jerusalem, with the support of the Palestinian Ministry for Tourism and Antiquities and the scientific partnership of the Al Quds University in Jerusalem and the Central Restoration Institute (ICR – Italian Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities).
