Nearly 15,000 kilometres from Italy to China on board electric driverless vehicles, another project of Italian excellence to export: the 13th Overland expedition get its officially sendoff with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Piazzale della Farnesina on 22 July in the presence of Minister Frattini himself.
The committee that left from Milan on 20 July will arrive at the end of October in Shanghai to participate in the Expo under way in that Chinese city. The electrically-driven prototypes on which it is travelling, designed in the context of a project developed at the University of Parma with €1.7 million in European funding, are equipped with cameras powered by solar panels that transmit images of the road to software capable of controlling the vehicles.
The expedition, sponsored by the 2015 Milan Expo, will terminate in Shanghai in October, creating a natural trait d’union between the 2010 Expo dedicated to the theme “Better City, Better Life” and that of Milan in 2015 entitled “Feed the Planet, Energy for Life”.
The initiative, promoted by the Grande Milano research centre falls within the framework of a strengthened collaboration between the MFA and Overland. Indeed, the foreign ministry hosted a press conference on 5 July for the closing of the 12th Overland expedition across Africa, which benefited from the major involvement of the ministry’s Development Cooperation.
