The Cooperation has approved €14 million in funding for a secondary road network in the Province of Herat. The initiative falls within the context of the National Rural Access Program (NRAP), one of the Afghan government’s priority rural development programmes.
The agreement was signed by Italian Ambassador Claudio Glaentzer and Afghan Finance Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal
The new project is part of a broader infrastructure development intervention in Afghanistan launched in 2005, which has led to the completion of the first tract of the Maidan Shar - Onay Pass and the construction of 23 km of road in the Musahi Valley.
Rehabilitation of the road is essential to moving people and goods and therefore a contribution to the country’s economic development.
This new funding goes along with €150 million in loans to be used to build strategic infrastructures in the western region, including the Heart international airport.
