Italy's Economic Diplomacy, 18 September: latest news from the world

TURKEY - Sparkle continues to put its stakes on environmental sustainability in its Istanbul Data Center

Sparkle, the first international service provider in Italy and eighth global operator in the world, has completed the expansion and renovation of its Istanbul Data Center with the adoption of state-of-the-art energy efficient equipment.

Today data centers consume more than 2% of the world’s electricity, requiring the implementation of more efficient technologies able to meet the growing demand for services while decreasing energy consumption.

Sparkle has been the first in Turkey to introduce Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in its premises in 2018, becoming the first Green Data Center in the country; located in Yenibosna and served by Sparkle’s Tier 1 global IP Transit service Seabone, the Sparkle Data Center in Istanbul  is one of the largest and most important open colocation facilities in Turkey, featuring advanced technologies and sophisticated monitoring systems.

In the last year, Sparkle's facility has been completely restructured and expanded with additional 300 m2 of white space area; moreover, several energy-related interventions have been carried out to improve the Data Center’s environmental impact and its reliability and efficiency to provide customers with additional power and space.

Upgrades included replacement of the power system with the adoption of energy-efficient technologies for all its components - Medium and Low Voltage (MV and LV) transformers, generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), and batteries – and the introduction of a new cooling system able to increase capacity by 40 percent while reducing consumption by 14 percent. These upgrades resulted in an improvement of the average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

In addition, the Data Center modernization included the renovation of fire and safety systems, to provide customers with a secure and sustainable infrastructure fully compliant with regulation on customer data security and privacy.
