Finland: project agreement for an undersea tunnel between Helsinki and Tallinn

The construction project for an undersea railway tunnel between Helsinki and Tallinn was one of the highlights of the Memorandum of Cooperation recently signed by Finland’s Minister of Transport, Anna Berner, and the Estonian Minister of Economy, Kristen Michal.

Under the Memorandum the tunnel, which envisages an 80 kilometre connection between the Pasila station in Helsinki and the Ulemiste station in Tallinn, would constitute the continuation of the "Rail Baltica" high-speed railway corridor linking Finland and the Arctic region to Central and Eastern Europe. The construction work is expected to begin once the work on the "Rail Baltica" is completed, but not before 2025.

According to a preliminary study commissioned by the cities of Helsinki and Tallin and the province of Harju in Estonia, the construction costs are estimated to be between 9 and 13 billion euros and the tunnel is forecast to generate a 3% GDP growth in Finland and a 0.5% growth in Estonia thanks to the increase in trade flows and commercial exchanges.
