GREECE - The foundation stone of Sparkle's fourth Data Centre is laid in Greece
Sparkle, Italy's number one operator of international wholesale services, ranking eighth worldwide, celebrated today the start of the construction of its fourth Data Centre in Greece, with the symbolic laying of the foundation stone.
The building - called Metamorphosis II - the first module of which is scheduled for completion and commissioning in early 2021, will provide the Country with one of the largest and most advanced "green" data centres in Europe.
Located in the area of Metamorphosis, in Attica, the new building will feature approx. 6,000 m2 of co-location space and will be equipped with high energy-efficient lighting, power supply and cooling systems, among the most advanced in Greece and the entire Balkans, with a carbon footprint reduction of about 28,000 tonnes per year.
Sparkle, which has been operating in Greece since 2001, offers its services in the Country through three proprietary Data Centres - two in the Athens area (Metamorphosis and Koropi), forming the backbone of the proprietary metropolitan fibre optic network servicing the city's businesses and directly interconnecting corporate clients and institutional entities, and a third centre in Crete – with premises totalling 8,000 m2 and a power output of 6 MW.
The Sparkle data centres in Greece are also fully integrated in Nibble, the new Pan-Mediterranean transport network, and in Seabone, Sparkle's IP/MPLS Tier-1 backbone, with the capacity to provide an all-round range of ICT solutions, from co-location to cloud and global carrier-grade connectivity services.
Sparkle is a market leader in the Greek Cloud and Data Centre market, with a 40% share of the co-location business and over 100 clients, among service providers, system integrators, institutions, local and multinational enterprises, and continues to grow.
Since 2019, the Sparkle data centres in Greece host the Syzefxis Project for the development of the Country's public administration ICT infrastructure. In addition, in the past year, the company has also been ISO 14001:2015 certified for its activities in Greece, becoming the first Data Centre provider in the Country to be certified for its proprietary environmental management system, and received the award of Cloud Service of the Year at the InfoCom World 2019 Conference.
