17th Week of the Italian Language in the World – Oslo

From neo-Realism to neo-Neorealism: languages and dialects in Italian cinema

Lecture by Marco Gargiulo, University of Bergen

The linguistic history of Italy, from post-World War II to date, can be interpreted by following the history of Italian cinema and by observing the attempts made at representing Italian society, its dialects and multilingualism. The lecture focused on the developments from the birth of neorealism to date, by presenting some examples drawn from the films of Rossellini, De Sica, Pasolini, Fellini, Scola, Garrone, Sorrentino, up to the latest experiences of the so-called “young directors” including Mereu, Mainetti, Giovannesi, Vannucci.
