Rome, 24 December 2009. It is hereby announced that the following appointment was recently approved by the Council of Ministers:

Guido Walter LA TELLA
Ambassador to Buenos Aires

Born in Reggio Calabria in 1948, he completed a Law degree at the University of Milan in1971 and entered the Foreign Service in 1974.

Among the positions held in the course of his career, after first being assigned to the secretariat of the Directorate General for Cultural, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, was named Second Secretary in New Delhi in 1975 and then First Trade Secretary in London in 1978.

Returning to Rome in 1983 to the Department for Development Cooperation, was appointed Trade Secretary in Belgrade in 1985 and later posted to Washington as Counsellor in 1988.

Back in Rome in 1993 was once again assigned to the Department of Development Cooperation.

Posted to Paris in 1997 as First Counsellor to the Italian Permanent Mission to the OECD and named Minister Plenipotentiary in 2000, where he was appointed as Minister Counsellor.

Ambassador to Addis Ababa from 2001 to 2005, where he was also accredited to the African Union with the title and rank of Ambassador.
Returned once again to Rome in 2005, was seconded in 2006 to the Ministry of Environmental Protection as Diplomatic Advisor to the Hon. Minister.
Was made Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic in 2006.

Returning to the Ministry in 2006, served directly under the Director General for Multilateral Economic and Financial Cooperation as G8 Sous-Sherpa, a post he maintained throughout the 2009 Italian G8 presidency and the L’Aquila Summit. Was appointed in August 2008 by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers as its representative to the negotiations between the major economies on climate change.
