The Italo-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology concluded today at Villa Madama with a solemn ceremony attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini, Minister for Education, University and Research Mariastella Gelmini and Egyptian Minister for Higher Education and Research the Hon. Hany Helal, who led a delegation of representatives from the Egyptian scientific and academic worlds.

The event ended a year-long agenda of initiatives and activities in Italy and in Egypt, whose participants were Italian and Egyptian universities and principal scientific research centres. Some initiatives were part of the “2009 International Year of Astronomy” proclaimed by the United Nations on Italy’s initiative.

As he opened the ceremony, Minister for Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini asserted that he considered “collaboration between Italy and Egypt in cultural and scientific fields as fundamental to promoting the growth and prosperity of both societies. The dossiers of the cultural, scientific and development sectors are the pillars of a collaboration that allows us both to look to the future with prospects for progress. The many successes achieved in this year can be added to the existing political dialogue and lead forward along the strategic path to an irreversible process in bilateral relations”.

Minister for Education, University and Research Mariastella Gelmini asserted: “Thanks to the commitment of our university institutions, which have been amply supported by Egypt, major projects have been launched offering young people training opportunities in international contexts.” She also underscored, “the effective and concrete results achieved in the course of the Italo-Egyptian year of Science and Technology, that bear witness to a greater friendship and collaboration between the two nations. Science for peace, is a slogan that could sum up the work that has been done”.

Egyptian Minister for Higher Education and Research the Hon. Hany Helal observed: “This year’s cooperation launched the diplomacy of Science and Technology: another tool that could bring the two countries together and contribute added value”.
This special year saw the organisation of over 100 events that included conferences, workshops, exhibitions, round table discussions and meetings to launch new projects, advanced courses and ceremonies for the signing of major bilateral agreements and other initiatives.

Presidents Berlusconi and Mubarak officially opened the Italo-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology during the Italo-Egyptian summit in Sharm El Sheik on 12 May 2009.
