“The violence perpetrated against the Coptic Christian community in Egypt is a cause for horror and censure”, was the comment by Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, on the dramatic news from Nag Hamadi.
Minister Frattini continued: “The international community cannot merely stand by in the presence of such events, nor can it ever lower its guard against religious intolerance, which is a serous violation of the fundamental human rights. Italy intends to go on defending the principle of religious freedom in all fora, as an absolute and inalienable value of civilised society.
Episodes of violence and discrimination against religious minorities, like yesterday’s events in Egypt, are a particular cause for concern. I will be speaking personally with my Egyptian counterpart, Aboul Gheit, during my visit to Cairo at the end of next week about the protection of the Coptic community in Egypt and the necessary prevention measures. I will speak, naturally, in the framework of the excellent relations of friendship and cooperation that bind our two countries”.
